Regarded as one of the greatest vocalists, bandleaders, and songwriters of the 20 th century, Freddie Mercury would lead his band Queen to nearly 20 chart toppers. His persona, stage presence, and ability to mix and mingle song genres was never and arguably has never been matched, even to this day.

Born in Zanzibar, a small island in Tanzania, young Freddie attended private schools and went on to study in England to receive a degree in graphical design. At St. Peter’s School in Bombay or what is now Mumbai, he formed his first band and taught himself to play the piano. After college, he continued playing the piano, writing songs, joining bands, and performing his music.

He wrote most of Queen’s top songs, but he also encouraged his band members to contribute their own ideas and work. In fact, his band members wrote seven of their top songs. He alone wrote Seven Seas of Rhye, Killer Queen, Bohemian Rhapsody, We are the Champions, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, and Bicycle Race. His ability to mix rock, disco, and even heavy metal gained him a vast following and caused his sales to soar on different charts.

Although he could never really read music, Freddie Mercury wrote his songs in complex chord systems that he often devised. Additionally, he would write music mainly on the piano, but also on different types of guitars. His band members were astonished at his musical ability with literally no formal training. Mercury’s only solo albums were Mr. Bad Guy and Barcelona, which was an operatic piece, done with Caballe.

Freddie Mercury was quite open with his sexuality, admitting publicly his own homosexuality. His friendship and love affair with Mary Austin, who was left the rights to his estate upon his death, was often discussed in the media. His love for her went beyond his sexual preference and he described her as his only true friend. Jim Hutton was Freddie Mercury’s life partner until his death at the age of 45 due to infections rooted in his contracting HIV and eventually AIDS.
