Frederic Cabanas: Marilyn Monroe In Spain

Pohdin tätä kirjaa pitkän aikaa (lähinnä hintansa vuoksi), mutta niin vain kävi, että eräänä päivänä töistä tultuani se köllötti keittiön pöydällä odottamassa minua. Ja kylläpä oli hyvä, että köllötti, koska nyt en kyllä luopuisi siitä millään.

Kirja on ehkä jollain muotoa epätavallinen Marilyn-kirja, ei mikään perusteos, mutta idea siinä on omaperäinen ja ehdottomasti toimiva. Marilyn Monroe In Spain esittelee nimensä mukaisesti Marilynin "elämän" Espanjassa - maassa, jossa Marilyn ei koskaan käynytkään. Kaikki alkoi 1.10.1949, jolloin eräässä espanjalaislehdessä julkaistiin nuoren Lucille Marchin kuva. Ikävä kyllä painovirhepaholainen oli tehnyt temppujaan, sillä kuva esitti Marilyn Monroeta. Loppuahan ei tunnetusti ole näkyvissä.

Kirjan suuri koko, mielenkiintoinen näkökulma ja tietenkin kuvat tekevät kokonaisuudesta loistavan. Kuvitus koostuu paitsi "tavallisista" Marilyn-kuvista, myös vanhoista lehtiartikkeleista (suurimmalta osalta espanjalaisista, mutta mukaan mahtuu myös mm. ranskalaisia ja italialaisia), mainoksista, kansikuvista, kirjoista, nuoteista ja niin edelleen. Näitä on ilo katsella ja artikkeleita lukea, mikäli ymmärtää kieltä. Ihanaa nähdä, kuinka Marilyn on aikanaan esitetty ja kuinka hänestä on kirjoitettu. Kuvat ovat myös hyvälaatuisia ja monesti melko suuria, ja niiden sommittelu on herkullinen. Cabanasin teksti on myös laadukasta.

Kyseessä on siis kirja kirjoista, lehtiartikkeleista ja kaikesta muusta, mitä Espanjassa on Marilyniin liittyen julkaistu. Cabanas itse on varsin kadehdittavasti kunnostautunut kaiken Marilyniin liittyvän julkaistun keräilyssä - siitä viitteitä etusisäkannen kuvassa, jossa nähdään hänen arkistonsa. Cabanas siis myös tietää, mistä puhuu, ja teksti kirjassa on hyvää. Kirjan lopussa on vielä luettelo espanjan kielellä julkaistuista Marilyn-kirjoista kansikuvineen. Eri painokset mukaan lukien niitä on 88. Miksi suomeksi on julkaistu vain kuusi (romaanit mukaan lukien kahdeksan)? Ymmärrän kyllä, että espanja on laajemmin puhuttu kieli kuin suomi, mutta silti tässä on mielestäni havaittavissa jonkinlainen epäkohta (tosin tätä epäkohtaahan voi pyrkiä muuttamaan...).

Mitäpä sitä muuta sanomaan, kuin että kirja on ihastuttava, visuaalisesti juhlava ja kaikenkaikkiaan loistava teos. Ainakin hardcore-faneille ehdoton hankinta. Kirjaa saa siis tilata Cabanasilta itseltään, ja tällä hetkellä Magical Marilyn fan clubilla on jäsentarjous, jonka avulla kirjan saa 10% alennuksella. Tilaamisen voi tällöin luonnollisesti hoitaa klubin kautta. Myös omistuskirjoitus on halutessa mahdollinen. Oma versioni on englanninkielinen, mutta espanjankielentaitoisille tiedoksi, että kirjasta on olemassa myös espanjankielinen versio, Marilyn Monroe en España. Ja lisäksi vielä, että kyseessä on rajattu painos, joten turhaan ei kannata viivytellä. (Lisää voipi kysellä, jos kiinnostaa, mutta muuten lopetan mainostamisen tähän.)

Muuten, tulipa tässä mieleeni, että pitäisikö minun jollain tavalla esitellä itseänikin täällä jossain välissä? Ehkä se olisi ollut korrektimpaa tehdä heti blogin alkuvaiheessa, mutta enhän minä ymmärtänyt. Joten hyvä lukijani, mitä mieltä olet: onko parempi myöhään vai ei milloinkaan?

I considered getting this book for quite some time (mainly because it's pretty expensive), but so it happened that one day when I came home from work, this was waiting for me on the kitchen table. And I'm glad it was, because now that I have it I wouldn't give it up.

It is a somewhat unusual Marilyn book, but the idea is definitely original and it works really well. Marilyn Monroe In Spain shows us Marilyn's "life" in Spain - a country she never visited. It all started October 1st, 1949, when a Spanish magazine published a photo of young actress called Lucille March. Unfortunately, that was an error, since the photo was actually of Marilyn Monroe. That's how it started, and there's no end in sight.

The book's size (large!), interesting point of view and pictures make the whole book excellent. Besides "normal" Marilyn pictures, there are pictures of old magazine articles (mostly Spanish, naturally, but some French, Italian etc), ads, covers, books and so on. These are a real pleasure to the eye and fun to read, if you understand the language. It's lovely to see how Marilyn was presented in her time and how they wrote about her. The pictures are high quality and often quite big, and they're placed deliciously. The text by Cabanas is also very good.

This is a book about books, magazine articles and everything else that has been published about Marilyn in Spain. Cabanas himself has got quite a collection with all things Marilyn, and you can get a glimpse of that too in the book (it's a paradise). Cabanas knows what he's talking about and that shows in the text. In the end there's also a bibliography of MM books that have been published in Spanish. Counting all different editions there are 88 books. In Finnish there are 6 books, 8 if you count novels. Why? I understand that Spanish is spoken more widely than Finnish, but still this is something that should be changed (but one can always work on that...)

I don't know what else to say, expect that the book is lovely, visually fantastic and all in all a gorgeous piece of work. At least for hard core Marilyn fans this is a must have. You can get the book by ordering it from Cabanas himself, and right now Magical Marilyn fan club has an offer for members: get a 10% discount of the book! Naturally you can then order the book through Magical Marilyn. You can get it signed too. My version is in English, but for those who know Spanish there's also a Spanish version available, called Marilyn Monroe en España. Also, these are both limited edition books, so don't waste your time. (You can always ask me more if you want to, but I'll stop the advertising here now.)

By the way, should I at some point introduce myself in this blog? Maybe it would have been more appropriate to do that in the beginning, but that never crossed my mind. So what do you think: better late or never?

Missä mennään

Kurkistan kesälaitumiltani takaisin blogiin. Laitumet sijaitsivat tällä kertaa muualla kuin oman koneen (ja kirjahyllyn) ääressä, joten sen vuoksi jälleen on pientä viivästystä havaittavissa. Tavoite 52 Marilyn-kirjan lukemisesta vuoden loppuun mennessä pätee kuitenkin edelleen, mikä tarkoittaa loppuvuoden ajalle todellista loppurutistusta!

Summer is over, and here I am again. This time I spent most of my summer away from my computer (and books), so that's why I'm a bit behind in my goal. The goal of reading 52 Marily  books by the end of the year still exists, so this means lots and lots of posts for the rest of the year!

Marsha Bellavance-Johnson: Marilyn Monroe In Hollywood

En ole ihan hävinnyt maan päältä, mutta blogi kyllä on kärsinyt. Näköjään se kirja viikossa -systeemi ei ole toiminut ihan parhaalla tavalla. Kirjoja on kyllä luettu, jospa niistä nyt ehtisi jotain tänne kirjoittamaankin. En uskalla edes laskea, kuinka monta kirjaa myöhässä olen.

Pari sanaa kuitenkin Marsha Bellavance-Johnsonin kirjasta Marilyn Monroe In Hollywood. Kirja edustaa samaa lajityyppiä kuin ehkä tunnetumpi Woodardin Hometown Girl, eli esittelee erilaisia Marilyniin liittyviä paikkoja. Nimensä mukaisesti kirja keskittyy Hollywoodiin, mutta nimestään poiketen esittelee myös muutamia paikkoja, jotka eivät Hollywoodissa sijaitse.

Kirja on ennemminkin kirjanen tai vihkonen kuin varsinainen kirja. Kyse on siis ohuesta, pehmeäkantisesta kirjasesta, jossa on 40 sivua. Etu- ja takakannessa on kuva Marilynistä; etukannessa komeilee tyypillinen glamour-Marilyn, mutta takakannessa on kuva Norma Jeanen malliajoilta. Kirjan kuvitus on muuten hoidettu mustavalkoisin piirustuksin, joiden pohjalta kyllä saa jonkinlaisen kuvan kyseessä olevasta kohteesta, mutta kuvitus ei todellakaan vastaa valokuvakuvitusta. Keskiaukeamalla on piirretty kartta, josta näkyy tärkeimmät kadut sekä kirjan kohteita.

Kirjan alussa on eräänlainen esipuhe, Note To Readers. Sen jälkeen alkaa varsinainen seitsemän sivun pituinen selvennys Marilynin elämästä. Tämän jälkeen kirja esittelee 13 Marilyniin liittyvää kohdetta: Hollygrove (orpokoti), Catalina Island, 20th Century Fox, Mann's Chinese Theatre, Beverly Hills Hotel, Walk Of Fame, Santa Monica, Restaurants, Hotel Del Coronado, Brentwood Home, Westwood Memorial Park, Books & Fan Clubs ja Marilyn Monroe Theatre. Jos tarkoiksi ruvetaan, näistä kohteista kovin moni ei ole tarkalleen ottaen Hollywoodissa. Lopuksi on vielä luettelo kirjoista.

Kirja on pieni, mutta mukava. Kyseessä ei ole huono kirja, mutta ehkä joiltain osin vajavainen. Informaatio on kuitenkin yllättävän paikkaansapitävää. Kirja on hyvä lisä, mutta ainoaksi matkaoppaaksi se ei mielestäni ihan riitä. Siihen tarkoitukseen suosittelen kattavampaa Hometown Girliä.

I haven't completely disappeared from the face of the Earth, but my blog has been suffering. Apparently the book-in-a-week system hasn't worked out like I hoped it would. I've been reading them though, and now I hope to find more time to blog about them.

A couple of words about Marilyn Monroe in Hollywood by Marsha Bellavance-Johnson. It's the same kind of book as perhaps better known Hometown Girl by Woodard is. It's basically a guide to different MM places. Like the name of the book implies, it concentrates on Hollywood, but unlike the name implies, there are also places featured that are not in Hollywood.

The book is actually more like a booklet than an actual book. It's a thin, soft-cover booklet with 40 pages. Both the front and back cover have a picture of Marilyn: in the front there's a typical glamour picture but in the back there's a photo from Norma Jeane's model days. Otherwise the pictures in the book are black and white illustrations. With them you get the idea of how a place looks like, but they're not as good as photographs would be. There's also an illustrated map featuring the most important streets and the places mentioned in the booklet are marked in the map.

First the book has a Note To Readers. Then we move on to a seven-page Introduction about Marilyn's life. After that the book presents us with 13 Marilyn places: Hollygrove (the orphanage), Catalina Island, 20th Century Fox, Mann's Chinese Theatre, Beverly Hills Hotel, Walk Of Fame, Santa Monica, Restaurants, Hotel Del Coronado, Brentwood Home, Westwood Memorial Park, Books & Fan Clubs and Marilyn Monroe Theatre. If you really think about it, not too many of these places are in actual Hollywood. In the end of the book there's also a Bibliography.

The book is small but nice. It's by no means a bad book, but it could have been more. The information is surprisingly accurate though. It's a nice book to have, but as an only travel guide to MM places in LA it's not quite enough. I'd suggest Hometown Girl first and then this one on the side.

Mike Evans: Marilyn Handbook

Toisena rästikirjana oli Mike Evansin Marilyn Handbook. Kirja on suorastaan herkullisen näköinen: pieni mutta paksu, kiiltävä kansi ja runsaasti kuvia. Mutta miten käy kakulle, joka on päältä kaunis...

Ihan hyvin tässä tapauksessa. Handbook on varsin mainio kirja. Sisäkansilla on aikajana, ja kirja on jaettu kuuteen lukuun. Lukujen nimet ovat 1. Orphan child, teenage bride 2. Glamour girl, Hollywood hopeful 3. Pinup queen, movie star 4. Divorce, the Method and Miller 5. Triumph and tragedy 6. Icon and legend. Marilynin elämä käydään siis tyypilliseen tapaan läpi aikajärjestyksessä. Viimeinen luku on omistettu Marilynin elämälle kuoleman jälkeen; legenda elää edelleen.

Kuvia on kirjassa todella runsaasti. On sekä mustavalko- että värikuvia, kuvia elokuvista, tapahtumista, kuvauspaikoilta, tunnettujen valokuvaajien kuvia, paparazzi-nappauksia, kansikuvia... Eivätkä kaikki kuvat ole niitä samoja vanhoja. Kirja toimii siis erinomaisesti kuvateoksenakin.

Muutamia pieniä virheitä tekstistä löytyy, joten käsikirjaan ei aina voi aukottomasti luottaa. Andre de Dienesin etunimi kirjoitetaan toistuvasti Andres, ja muitakin vastaavanlaisia virheitä esiintyy. Pääpiirteissään teksti on kuitenkin hyvää. Tekstin seassa on myös lausahduksia sekä Marilyniltä itseltään että hänet tunteneilta ihmisiltä. Kirja sisältää myös ohjaaja Roy Ward Bakerin, valokuvaaja Bob Willoughbyn sekä valokuvaaja Cecil Beatonin avustajan Ed Pfitzenmeierin haastattelut.

Kirjan valtteja ovat siis sen söpöys, sopiva koko, runsas kuvitus sekä mielenkiintoinen tieto. Suosittelen.

The second book that has been waiting for a review was Marilyn Handbook by Mike Evans. It looks delicious: small but chunky, with a shining cover and lots of pictures. But is it as good as it looks?

You can relax: the book is good. There's a timeline, and the book is divided into six chapters: 1. Orphan child, teenage bride 2. Glamour girl, Hollywood hopeful 3. Pinup queen, movie star 4. Divorce, the Method and Miller 5. Triumph and tragedy 6. Icon and legend. The book tells the story of her life in chronological order as it's typically done. The last chapter deals with her life after death; how her legend still lives on.

There are a lot of pictures in this book. There are black and white as well as color photos, photos from movies, events, movie sets, photos taken by famous photographers, paparazzi shots... And not all the pictures are the same old ones. The book works well as a picture book.

Some little mistakes can be found in the text. The first name of Andre de Dienes is constantly spelled Andres, and other similar mistakes exist as well. But the text is still good. There are also quotes by Marilyn and the people who knew her. It also includes interviews with the director Roy Ward Baker, photographer Bob Willoughby and Ed Pfitzenmeier who was photographer Cecil Beaton's assistant.

The book is cute, perfect size, has lots of photos and interesting information. I recommend it.

Jim Dougherty: To Norma Jeane, With Love, Jimmie

Päivää taas pitkästä aikaa. Kiirettä on pitänyt, enkä ole ehtinyt blogata aikaisemmin - muutaman lähipäivän aikana on siis luvassa monta postitusta. Kirjoja olen nimittäin kuitenkin lukenut, ja aloitetaan nyt siitä vanhimmasta: Jim Doughertyn kirjasta To Norma Jeane, With Love, Jimmie.

Kyseessä on siis Marilynin, tai Norma Jeanen, ensimmäisen aviomiehen, James Doughertyn kirja. Doughertyltä on yhteensä kaksi kirjaa, joista tämä on se uudempi (ensimmäinen on nimeltään Secret Happiness of Marilyn Monroe). Kirja on muotoa "as told to LC Van Savage", eli Van Savage on ilmeisestikin jonkin sortin haamukirjoittaja.

Kirja tarjoaa hyvin mielenkiintoisen katsauksen nuoren Norma Jeanen elämään sekä Jim ja Norma Jeane Doughertyn yhteiselämään. He menivät naimisiin hyvin nuorina (Norma Jeane oli juuri täyttänyt 16) ja avioliitto päättyi muutaman vuoden kuluttua, v. 1946. Avioliiton aikana Norma Jeane tuntui kasvavan ihmisenä ja uskaltavan ottaa riskejä, joihin kuului mallinuran aloittaminen ja elokuvatähteyteen pyrkiminen vastustavasta aviomiehestä huolimatta.

Norma Jeane oli hyvin nuori vaimoksi, ja välillä tuntuu, ettei Jim Dougherty ole aivan ymmärtänyt sitä - tai ei ainakaan ymmärtänyt ollessaan itse vielä myöskin nuori aviomies. Välillä hän puhuu Norma Jeanesta hyvin lapsellisena, mutta suloisena tyttönä, jolla ei aivan ollut käsitystä kaikista asioista. Dougherty myös myöntää olevansa vanhanaikainen: vaimon paikka on kotona. Hän kuitenkin muistelee Norma Jeanea lämmöllä ja syvästi kaivaten. Välillä tuntuukin, että Dougherty maalaa avioliitosta liiankin ruusuista unelmakuvaa. Ehkä aika on kullannut muistot.

Kirja käy läpi kaiken: kuinka Norma Jeane hiljalleen astui Doughertyn elämään ja kuinka hänestä tuli yhä tärkeämpi kunnes he vihdoin menivät naimisiin, millaista oli olla naimisissa Norma Jeanen kanssa, miten he alkoivat ajautua erilleen ja viimein erosivat, ja mitä tapahtui Doughertyn elämässä sen jälkeen. Kirjassa on paljon suloisia muistoja, ja Norma Jeanesta piirtyy hyvin elävä kuva kirjan sivuilla.

Jim Dougherty kuoli muutama vuosi sitten, mutta onneksi meillä on hänen muistelmansa. Vaikkakin avioliiton ruusuiseen kuvaukseen voikin suhtautua hieman varauksella, kyseessä on silti teos, joka antaa jälleen uuden näkökulman Marilyniin. Suosittelen kirjaa ehdottomasti.

Hello, it's been a while. I've been very busy and hadn't had time to blog about the books - so prepare youself for many posts during the next couple of days. I have read MM books and I thought I'd start from the one I read first: To Norma Jeane, With Love, Jimmie by Jim Dougherty.

It is a book by James Dougherty, Marilyn Monroe/Norma Jeane's first husband. There are two books by Dougherty, this being the newer one (the first is Secret Happiness Of Marilyn Monroe). This book says it is "as told to LC Van Savage", so I assume Van Savage is a sort of a ghost-writer.

The book offers an interesting look into Norma Jeane's life and Jim and Norma Jeane Dougherty's life together. They got married very young (Norma Jeane had just turned 16) and the marriage lasted only a couple of years: they divorced in 1946. It seems that during the marriage Norma Jeane grew as a person and was able to take risks, which included starting a career as a model and dreaming of being an actress, despite of her husband's disapproval.

Norma Jeane was a very young wife, and sometimes it seems that Jim Dougherty didn't quite understand that - at least at the time when he was a young husband. Sometimes he paints a picture of Norma Jeane as a very childish yet wonderful girl, who didn't quite understand  everything. Dougherty also admits that he's old-fashioned: a wife should stay at home. But he does remember Norma Jeane with warm affection and clearly misses her deeply. At times I got the feeling that he looks at their marriage through rose-colored glasses. Maybe the time has done its tricks.

The book covers it all: how Norma Jeane slided into Jim Dougherty's life and became more and more important until the got married, what it was like to be married to Norma Jeane, how they slowly drifted apart and divorced, and what happened in Dougherty's life after that. There are a lot of sweet memories, and Norma Jeane becomes alive once again on the pages of this book.

Jim Dougherty passed away a couple of years ago, but luckily we have his memoirs. Even if you should be a bit cautious when you read about their wonderful, wonderful marriage the book does give a whole new look at Marilyn. I highly recommend this book.

An Evening With Marilyn

Viime viikon kirjana oli Douglas Kirklandin An Evening With Marilyn. Oma yksilöni löytyi viime lokakuussa Helsingin kirjamessuilta. Se kertoo Kirklandin kuvaussessiosta Marilynin kanssa sekä siitä, millaisena ihmisenä Kirkland Marilynin näki. Monet Marilynin valokuvaajathan ovat kirjoittaneet vastaavanlaisen kirjan (ja niitä on jonkin verran käsitelty ja tullaan käsittelemäänkin myös tässä blogissa).

Kirklandin kirjaa on olemassa muutamaa eri versiota. On olemassa ainakin iso ja pieni englanninkielinen sekä saksankielinen versio (Eine Nacht Mit Marilyn). Omani on se pienempi englanninkielinen. Kirja ei silti ole mielestäni liian pieni, sillä kuvat ovat yleensä sivun tai aukeaman kokoisia. Ja kauniitahan ne ovat, sitä ei voi kieltää. Kirkland otti kuvia Marilynistä pääasiassa sängyssä, mutta mukana on pari muutakin kuvaa. Sängyssä otetut kuvat ovat kuitenkin mielestäni hyvin kauniita, jotkut niistä jopa kauneimpia Marilynistä otettuja kuvia. Osa kuvista näyttää kuitenkin hieman rakeisilta, mutta tämä on ilmeisesti ollut alunperinkin tarkoitus.

Kirjan nimi (Ilta Marilynin kanssa) sekä sängyssä otetut kuvat vihjaavat tietenkin johonkin suuntaan. Ja Kirkland myöntää sen. Hän ei kuitenkaan kohtele Marilyniä pelkkänä seksiobjektina, vaikka ihailee Marilynin tätäkin puolta. Kirklandin teksti on miellyttävää luettavaa koko kirjan ajan. Hän kertoo Marilynin tapaamisesta, kuvaussessiosta, joka tapahtui marraskuussa 1961 sekä siitä, kuinka kuuli Marilynin kuolemasta. Mielestäni ote on koko ajan kohtelias ja mukava Marilyniä kohtaan.

Kirklandin kirja on siis mukava lisä Marilyn-hyllyyn. Valokuvaajien kirjoja kannattaa mielestäni hankkia sen perusteella, että itse tykkää juuri sen valokuvaajan kuvista ja että teos on silmää miellyttävä. Hyvä tekstikään ei ole pahitteeksi. Näillä perusteilla itse päädyin An Evening With Marilyniin.

Last week's book was An Evening With Marilyn by Douglas Kirkland. I found my copy last October at Helsinki Book Fair. It's a story about Kirkland's photo session with Marilyn and how he sees Marilyn as a person. Many photographers have written a similar book about Marilyn (as you have seen and will be seeing in this blog).

There are a couple of different versions of this book available. There's a larger and a smaller English version and a German version (Eine Nacht Mit Marilyn). I have the smaller English version. I don't think it's too small though - the pictures usually take up one or two pages. And the photos are beautiful, there's no doubt about that. Kirkland took photos of Marilyn in bed mostly, but there are a couple of other photos too. The bed pictures are very beautiful, in my opinion some of them are among the most beautiful pictures ever taken of her. Some of the pictures seem a bit grainy, but that's apparently how it's supposed to be.

The name of the book, An Evening With Marilyn, and the bed pictures are obviously a hint. And Kirkland admits that. But he doesn't treat Marilyn purely as a sex object, even though he agrees that she was sexy. Kirkland's text is a pleasant read throughout the book. He tells us about meeting Marilyn, their photo session which took place in November 1961, and how he found out Marilyn had died. In my opinion he's respectful and emphatetic towards Marilyn.

Kirkland's book is a nice addition to a MM book collection. When you choose from books by photographers you should choose the photographers whose photos you really like, and if the book looks nice and text is good that also helps. That's how I chose An Evening With Marilyn.

Marilyn Monroen monta elämää / Many Lives of MM

Hei vaan. Viime kerrasta onkin kulunut jo vähän aikaa. Olen kyllä lukenut kaksi MM-kirjaa kahdessa viikossa, mutta aikaa niistä bloggaamiseen ei vaan ole tahtonut löytyä. Joten siksi tänään luvassa on kaksi erillistä postitusta (koska kumpikin kirja ansaitsee omansa).

Ekan viikon kirjana oli Sarah Churchwellin Marilyn Monroen monta elämää, englanniksi Many Lives of Marilyn Monroe. Luin siis sen suomeksi (koska sellainen versio löytyy omasta hyllystäni). Turhan monia MM-kirjoja kun ei ole suomennettu, ja suomalaistahan tulee suosia...

Churchwellin ideana on tutustua mahdollisimman laajasti Marilynistä kirjoitettuihin kirjoihin ja niiden eri väitteisiin ja tapoihin esittää Marilyn ja hänen elämänsä eri vaiheet. Churchwell kokoaa sitten nämä erilaiset väitteet ja näkökulmat yhteen ja vertailee niitä keskenään. Kirjassa käsitellään Marilynin persoonaa, luonnetta ja hänen elämänsä tärkeitä vaiheita ja väitteitä. Kuka oli Marilynin isä, oliko Marilynin äiti mielenvikainen, millainen lapsuus hänellä oli, millaisia hänen avioliittonsa olivat, harrastiko hän seksiä edistääkseen uraansa, oliko hän hyvä näyttelijä, kuinka hän kuoli... kysymyksiä on vaikka kuinka paljon ja kirja yrittää vastata niihin kaikkiin.

Teksti on suhteellisen tieteellisen kuuloista, akateemisen oloista tekstiä. Tämä saattaa karkottaa osan lukijoista, vaikka se ei teekään kirjasta liian vaikealukuista. Jos kuitenkin akateemisyyteen pyritään, yksi asia pitäisi pitää mielessä: lähdekritiikki. Churchwell kyllä mainitsee lähteet yleensä kiitettävästi, mutta kritisoi niitä hyvin vähän tai ei ollenkaan. Esimerkiksi Lena Pepitonen kirja, jota pidetään vähintäänkin epäluotettavana, asetetaan samalle viivalle joidenkin yleisesti arvostettujen Marilyn-elämäkertojen kanssa. Elämäkertojenkin kanssa pitäisi muistaa, että niiden kirjoittajilla on taas omat lähteensä... Mailerin ja Oatesin puolifiktiivisiä kirjoja kohtaan Churchwell kyllä esittää kritiikkiä, mikä omasta mielestäni onkin aivan paikallaan - kuinka paljon todellista historiallista henkilöä voi mennä muuttelemaan vain sen selityksen varjolla, että kyseessä on romaani?

Kirjasta saisi varmasti eniten irti, mikäli olisi itse tutustunut kaikkiin siinä mainittuihin kirjoihin. Sikäli hieman hassua suomentaa tällainen kirja, kun läheskään kaikkia siinä siteerattuja ja vertailtuja kirjoja ei ole suomennettu. Toisaalta tämän voidaan nähdä kokoavan niiden kaikkien tiedot yhteen. Silloin on kuitenkin vaarana se, että uskotaan täysin kaikki Churchwellin mielipiteet.

Kirjan viimeinen kappale käsittelee sitä, millaisena Churchwell itse näkee Marilynin. Silloin Churchwell hyppää pois tutkijan roolista ja esittää oman mielipiteensä siitä, millainen Marilyn lopulta oli - kukapa pystyisi vastustamaan kiusausta tehdä näin tällaisen kirjan päätteeksi. Tämä kappale oli mielestäni hyvin mielenkiintoista luettavaa: eri ihmisillä on niin erilaisia käsityksiä Marilynistä - siitä kirjan nimikin.

Hi there. It's been a while. I have read two MM books in the past two weeks but I haven't had time to blog about them. So that's why there will be two posts today (one for each book).

The first book is Many Lives of Marilyn Monroe by Sarah Churchwell. I read the Finnish version of the book (Marilyn Monroen monta elämää), because I have that in my bookshelf. Not a lot of MM books have been translated into Finnish, so I prefer a Finnish version whenever possible.

The idea of Churchwell and her book is to read as many books about Marilyn as possible and discover all the different ways of portraying Marilyn and the events of her life. Churchwell then puts all of these opinions together in her book and compares them. The book is dealing with Marilyn's persona, her character, the important events of her life and different claims. Who was Marilyn's father, was her mother mentally ill, how was her childhood, what were her marriages like, did she have sex to get ahead in her career, was she a good actress, how did she die... there are many questions and the book tries to answer them all.

The text is rather academic, which might turn off some possible readers. You shouldn't worry about the text, you'll get used to it. But if a book strives to be academic, one thing should be kept in mind: criticizing the reliability of the source material. A good academic writer can't swallow just anything. Churchwell does mention her sources, but criticizes them very little if at all. For example, Lena Pepitone's book, which is considered at least unreliable, is seen as credible a source as the highest rated biographies. And with biographies you should keep in mind that their authors have their own sources... Churchwell does provide some criticism towards Mailer and Oates' books, which in my opinion is a very good thing - how much are you allowed to alter a historic person while hiding behind the claim that you're only writing a novel?

To get most out of this book it would probably help to read all the books she mentions in hers. But are all of those books available for everyone? On the other hand, it can be seen that this book gathers together all the information in all of those books. But then there's the danger that people believe all of Churchwell's opinions - which are opinions.

The final chapter of the book deals with how Churchwell sees Marilyn. Churchwell is no longer investigating, she's telling her own feelings about Marilyn - who could resist doing this in the end of a book like this. I found this very interesting: people have such different perspections on the same person - hence the name of the book.
