Known to Muslims, or those of the Islamic faith, as the “Messenger of God” more than he a prophet, Muhammad, also known as Mohammed, became the founder of a religion that has spread worldwide. With the troubles occurring in Mecca, Muhammad received visions that he and his followers claim were direct correspondences with God in order that his people learn the way.

Not much is known about the early life of Mohammed. He was born just before the sixth century in the caravan-controlling town of Mecca. In this area, merchants became quiet wealthy due to the trading that was coming from both India and Africa. Around 610, Mohammed began having visions that were recorded in the holy book known as the Koran, or Qur’an, a book thought to be basically revealed to the people directly from the mouth of God, Muhammad being the deliverer.

When Muhammad first began having these visions, he kept them to himself, not wanting others to think him as blasphemous. Following his revelations to his friends, they considered him a prophet and Mohammed began describing his revelations to the people of Mecca. In due time, controversy began to develop; he and his followers had to flee and eventually settled some 200 miles north of the city. Slowly, but steadily, Mohammed kept gaining more followers who would join him at his oasis. When military attacks began, he and his people suffered many causalities, but were eventually able to fight off anyone who came near the oasis thanks to the trenches they built and small fortifications that would allow them to see who was coming from a distance.

Mohammed then marched with 10,000 men on Mecca and took the city without much skirmish. With the stronghold of Mecca behind him, Muhammad began teaching the people more about religion, how to properly worship God, and emphasized that there would be a Judgment Day, and that God was only one. He also introduced the month of cleansing, known as Ramadan, and taught his people that pilgrimages should be made to Mecca.

As Mohammed’s message spread and his popularity grew, he led many battles to take over surrounding lands and convert the people to the religion he founded. While he was willing to negotiate political dealings, he wasn’t as lenient with those of other faiths, especially the Jewish inhabitants of the city who also controlled much of the merchant trade. He focused on taking over lands in what is now known as Syria and other areas in Iraq. His cunning led to the growth of the Arab Empire and with it the spread Islam
